Sandy is a New York City tutor who specializes in Arithmetic tutoring, SAT prep tutoring, Writing tutoring, and much more. She graduated from Georgetown University in 2012 with a Bachelors degree in History. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sandy: Georgetown University is located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., which is an urban environment. The campus was safe most of the time, but like any place, it's important to be careful and wise when walking around at night. I always thought it was best to walk with other people or to use the late-night shuttle service that the school provides, which is called Safe Rides. There are no metro (train) stops near Georgetown, but there are several buses that can take you to metro stops. Some students used bikes but I never needed a car, since I just used the buses. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sandy: The professors were very available, both by email and via office hours. I never felt uncomfortable or intimidated about approaching a professor for help/questions. They really care about students. The teaching assistants are also great and I had some fun ones who were pretty funny and relaxed. I never really consulted my academic advisers except once or twice but they were approachable as well. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sandy: The rooms are okay and the dining hall is also not bad. Of course, as with any dining hall, students may soon feel like they need to eat something outside of the dining hall options. But chicken finger Thursdays are the best! They also had great vegetarian chicken nuggets. The location of the school is not always convenient, since it's necessary to take buses to really go into the heart of D.C., but there were plenty of opportunities to explore, nonetheless. Also, there are many clubs and student organizations on campus, and it was also possible to successfully start organizations. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Sandy: Georgetown is very oriented towards Social Sciences and Languages. The Language departments are amazing. I was able to learn Italian and French because of my dedicated professors and the amazing departments. I also took Arabic, which is excellent at Georgetown. Economics, History, International Relations, etc. are all incredibly well represented at Georgetown and have amazing professors. I learned a lot as a History major because I feel the school provided a wide array of History courses. I really enjoyed my major and believe it was only made better by the dedicated professors. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sandy: It was somewhat difficult for me in my freshman year, and I made more friends in the subsequent years. I believe many people started out with friends in freshman year that they then replaced with other friends later on. But this was a normal experience for many Georgetown students. Greek life does not play a significant role on campus, as we only have a handful of fraternities. I was in Alpha Phi Omega, which is a service fraternity. In fact, I ended up making many friends because of this fraternity. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Sandy: The Career Center is great for help with resumes and cover letters. I learned everything I know about formatting from the Career Center. They also allow students to sign up for newsletters for various industries, like Education and Government. Every year there are job fairs where many reputable companies (especially in the field of business) come to recruit students. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges?Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sandy: The main campus library was a bit tricky to use during finals because so many people would pack into it and stay for extended periods of time. So, many people actually went to the Medical School library and studied there. There are also buildings where classes are normally held but where people can study instead. I used to go to the ICC galleria often. I knew people who went to the Business School or to Sellinger Lounge (in the Leavey Center) to study. Dorm lounges are okay but may be difficult sometimes because of people coming and going. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sandy: There is great shopping at Georgetown, as M Street NW is very close. There are great restaurants and some bars. Many people also liked to go to U Street, just to get off campus and go to other great restaurants. There is a movie theater near campus. It's not easy to be bored at Georgetown because of M Street and because of the possibilities D.C. provides. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sandy: I liked the class sizes. My Languages classes were always small, which was great. As my History courses became more and more focused, those classes were also smaller. A small class for me was 15 20 students. I had large classes when the course was basic, like Intro to Ethics or Macroeconomics. Even then, there were always recitations with smaller groups and teaching assistants, where students could pose questions about anything they didn't understand during the larger lectures. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sandy: I was an Italian minor at Georgetown and was extremely interested in becoming fluent. So, I would always go to one professor with articles in Italian that I wanted to discuss. She would always welcome me and did not mind my (possibly annoying) determination. Instead, she was happy I was so interested and gladly spoke to me whenever I found her in her office. In the case of fatal attacks or robberies, a crime scene investigator will arrange for photographs of the deceased to be taken. Photo credit: Colin Remas Brown via Visualhunt.com / CC BYWhile most photographs are kept guarded in police files, some chilling photos are released to the public, including some macabre photos showing New York crime scenes in the 1910s which have been printed as part of a book called Murder in the City, by Wil fried Kaute.Although the pictures were not intended for the public, they have been collated and serve a purpose to show what crime looked like in the Big Apple during this decade (where homicide rates were extremely high).BioArt - Taking Art To The ExtremesBioArt, is a relatively new art practice whereby artists and scientists are creating pieces (mainly in the lab but also in studios and galleries) made from live tissues, bacteria and other living organisms. Pioneers of this branch of art are determined to transform the science into works of art by using their bodies and other living things and by adopting the help of engineers and scientists.Orlan, for example, is an artist who uses cosmetic surgery procedures to change her appearance to resemble famous images of women in art, using the procedure as part of the performance.Her aim is to focus on the power of technology to transform our physical appearance.  Orlan’s work also pushes boundaries in terms of human health with her nu merous experiments with going under the knife. That sure is dedication to one’s craft!A Quest To Find The Perfect Body?Having considered all of the above examples, can we conclude that Biology’s place in art is centred around finding the perfect body?While many people in society share roughly the same ideology concerning feminine and masculine beauty (hence why the same actors and singers are voted as the ‘sexiest’ or ‘best looking’ in magazine and television polls) it would seem that this belief of what is attractive and what isn’t is very much influenced by the times.Just to prove that this is the case, you are unlikely to look at a painting from the 1700s, of a then very beautiful women or a strappingly handsome man, and to think that they are good-looking. This is because, as with most things, tastes change and external factors play a big part. What  on earth might those from the 18th century have had to say about Kim Kardashian’s famous pear-shaped body, or Arno ld Schwarzenegger’s bulging biceps?The answer to the aforementioned question is therefore an astounding no. We can safely say, however, that Biology’s place in Art is to embrace the human body including all of our unique traits or imperfections, while also celebrating how strong and powerful our bodies are as well as referencing all that they are capable of doing.Horticultural ArtMoving away from the controversies of the human body, however, plant matter has equally been the focus of many artists’ attention over the years.Perhaps it is their ability to reproduce, just like humans, that draws us to flowers, or maybe it is simply because they look so nice.Anatomical images of flowers are very popular among homeowners, with many prints and drawings being available to purchase online and in art or poster shops, but the subject is also very closely linked to your biological studies.Horticultural drawings are commercially very popular but they also serve a purpose to the scientific community. If you teach yourself to play the drums, you mightn’t pay attention to your posture.Are you sitting comfortably? (Source: krlosrocha)However, a bad posture can result in back problems and tendonitis.  Furthermore, a good posture will help you improve your speed and dexterity on the snare drum, toms, and cymbals.Playing in front of a mirror can help you adopt the right posture, effectively making you both the student and the teacher.Your Position on the Drum ThroneY ou need to be sitting towards the edge of the stool so that you can free up your thighs. The angle between your thighs and calves will be greater than 90 °.The snare drum should be between your knees and slightly higher than your thighs.Hi-hat and Snare PositionYour arms should be crossed.Your right hand will be over your left hand so that you can hit the edge of the hi-hat.The left hand is positioned to hit the snare drum directly in the centre. The angle between your two drumsticks should be just under 90 °.You’ll adopt the same positions for the toms as you would the snare drum.Bass drum PositionThere are several possible positions. I’m going to start with the most logical and the quickest.Place your foot as far up the pedal as possible and lift your heel.You’ll move your entire leg when you hit the bass drum as well as feeling it in your thigh.Cymbal positionWith the ride, your right hand will be perpendicular to the floor. You’ll hit it with the tip of the stick.If you play the bell, you’ll hit is with the thicker part of the stick to the left of the screw.It’s the same for the crash cymbal except that you’ll only play using the thicker part of the stick.Holding the DrumsticksUnfortunately, it’s not as easy as you might think!Just like religion and politics, everyone has an opinion on the matter.There are two main ways to hold the drumsticks.However, in reality, you can hold the drumsticks in four different ways.Traditional Grip: This is the oldest way to hold the drumsticks and is commonly used in jazz drumming. You don’t hold each stick in exactly the same way. Your non-dominant hand holds the stick under the palm whereas your dominant hand will hold the stick similarly to how you’d hold a pen. Have a look at how Buddy Rich does it.Matched Grips:French grip: you hold the sticks towards one another. You use your fingers to create the movement in the sticks.German grip: the sticks are moved by the wrists and your palms are parallel to the ground. This method is used to generate power.American grip: This is a mix of the two previous grips and is difficult to get right. You use both your fingers and your wrists in order to give you more versatility.The toms that you see on drum kits nowadays were once war drums. Each one has its pros and cons depending on the style of music you’re playing.Recording and Filming YourselfIf you’re not getting music or drum tutorials, it can be difficult to correct errors. It’s a good idea to record or film yourself with a camera.Sit in front of your computer and film yourself.Not only will you be able to see yourself getting better, but  you’ll also be able to check your posture and any techniques you’re wanting to get better at.Play with a MetronomeWhether you’re teaching yourself to drum or learning with a teacher, the metronome will quickly become your best friend.A drummer’s job is to keep time. To make sure yo u’re perfect at it, there’s nothing better than a metronome.A drumbeat helps the electric guitar, bass, saxophone, etc., to stay in time.It may seem dull, but you have to keep time correctly. It’s also a good idea to start slowly at around 60 beats per minute before moving up to 90 and then 120.Be PatientWhether you’re learning a binary or ternary rhythm, it can take some time, especially if you’re teaching yourself.Be patient!You’re not going to learn any quicker by skipping important steps. Playing drums is a mentally demanding activity as you need to have coordination and be able to operate your limbs independently of one another.  You also need to give your brain time to remember things.Playing slowly at first will allow your brain to understand and remember each technique. You can’t play quickly if you can’t play slowly. (Source: StockSnap)It’s better to practise for 15 minutes every day than to practice for 2 hours once a week.It’s a good idea to work around your schedule and fill the smaller gaps with a bit of drumming practice.Make sure that drumming becomes a habit, something that you do without even thinking about it. Above all, make sure that you concentrate when you practise. Turn off the TV, set yo ur phone to silent, and disconnect from the internet so that nothing stands in the way of your progress.RelaxTo get better at playing the drums, regardless of the genre, you need to relax.Playing while tense will make your playing less fluid. Furthermore, if you’re tense, you also run the risk of doing yourself an injury.Think about doing some breathing exercises and stretching before you start practising: especially your neck, back, wrists, and heels.You should breathe naturally as you practise. If you notice that you’re holding your breath, stop the exercise and bring your breathing back to normal.Learn the RudimentsThe three main rudiments are:Single stroke roll: RLRL RLRLDouble stroke roll: RRLL RRLLParadiddle: RLRR LRLLThese three rudiments are essential for drummers and are great for getting you started. They’re also really useful for drum breaks.Of course, there are plenty of others. The Percussive Arts Society has 40 of them for you to check out.Learn Rhythm TheoryWhil e music theory can be complicated, rhythm theory is a little easier to learn. It would be a shame to not make use of it.This will open a lot of doors for you, especially when it comes to understanding sheet music for drums.  You’ll also be able to communicate with different musicians more easily as well as read sheet music.Play Anywhere and EverywherePlaying the drums as often as possible is a great idea but you won’t always have a drum kit with you. It doesn’t matter!Buying a drum kit isn’t necessarily the first thing you need to do. You can practise with the drumsticks before you get your first kit.Cushions, your thighs, electronic pads, and even a chair can become a musical instrument!  Even air drums can help you practise before you buy an electronic or acoustic drum kit.That said, even if you have a drum kit, there’s nothing stopping you from practising a few rudiments on your lunch break.Enjoy Yourself!  Don’t forget that playing a musical instrument is fun.Of cour se, you’ll need to practise in order to acquire new techniques or become a professional drummer.However, playing for fun is a great way to improve your creativity and that’s why we often want to learn to play a musical instrument!Make the most of it by playing a song you like or just improvising.Join a BandWhether with friends or by placing an ad for other musicians, playing in a band is a great way to get better quickly.Joining a band is a great way to practise playing the drums with other musicians.
